Microneedling
How it works
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that generates new collagen and skin tissue for smoother, firmer, more toned skin. Microneedling is mostly used on the face and may treat acne scars, other scars, age spots, large pores, uneven skin tone, reduced skin elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles. In addition to facial concerns, microneedling is sometimes used to treat stretch marks in other areas of the body.
How does Microneedling work?
Microneedling creates microscopic punctures in the skin. Simply put, microneedling is the insertion of very fine short needles into the skin for rejuvenation. But, if the prospect of multiple needle wounds sounds slightly ominous to you, know that the punctures are more like pin-pricks that enter only surface-level deep.
What are the benefits of Microneedling?
Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen. The idea is that pinpricks from the procedure cause slight injury to the skin and that the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue. This new skin tissue is, in turn, more even in tone and texture. It’s normal for the skin to lose collagen via age or injury. By encouraging the skin to make new tissue, there may be more collagen to help make the skin firmer, too.
How soon do you see results from Mirconeedling?
Microneedling offers fairly immediate results. From microneedling alone, you will look plump, pink, and luminous for a couple of weeks. On a short-term basis, it plumps the skin and makes the skin look more radiant from inflammation and very superficial swelling. But microneedling also promises improvement over time. According to a 2008 study, skin treated with four microneedling sessions spaced one month apart, produced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin six months after completing treatment.
Are there any risks or side effects from Microneedling?
Like all cosmetic procedures, microneedling isn’t without risk. The most common side effect is minor skin irritation immediately following the procedure. You may also see redness for a few days. Call your doctor if you notice more severe side effects, such as:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Bruising
- Peeling
